Two products get talked about as if they’re the same thing. They aren’t. One is an accessory you bolt on. The other is a modification to your bike’s braking system.
If you’re shopping and the difference isn’t obvious to you, that’s not your fault — the listings blur it deliberately. Here’s what actually separates them, and why it matters more than the price does.
What a brake light flasher actually is
A brake light flasher — sometimes sold as a modulator, a blinker module, or a flashing brake kit — is not a light. It’s a circuit that gets fitted inside your existing brake light, or spliced into the wiring that feeds it.
It doesn’t add anything to your bike. It changes how a part your bike already has behaves. Press the lever and instead of your brake lamp coming on the way the manufacturer designed it to, it pulses.
That’s the whole product: an alteration to a component that was built, tested and type-approved to do one specific thing.
Why that’s a bigger decision than it looks
Your brake light isn’t a styling part. It’s the piece of equipment that tells the vehicle behind you that you’re slowing down, and it’s part of the braking system as your manufacturer signed it off.
Once someone opens that lamp and puts a module inside it, two things follow.
You’ve altered a safety component. Not added to it — altered it. The lamp no longer behaves the way it did when the bike was approved.
You’ve almost certainly affected your warranty. Manufacturers don’t generally warrant parts that have been opened and modified, and that can extend past the bulb to the braking and lighting circuit it sits in. Worth asking your dealer directly before anyone touches it, because the answer tends to be less generous than the seller of the module suggests.
None of which makes flashers universally a bad idea. It makes them a modification, and modifications deserve to be understood before they’re bought.
What a strobe light is
A strobe is an independent unit. Two of them, actually — one on each side, low, flanking your number plate, each on its own bolt-on bracket under an existing bolt.
They have their own housing, their own LED, their own switch. They run their own patterns whether you’re braking, cruising or stopped at a signal. Your brake light is not opened, not rewired out, not touched. It keeps doing exactly what it did the day the bike left the factory.
That’s the difference in one line: a flasher changes a light you already have. A strobe adds lights you didn’t.
And because a strobe is additive and bolt-on, it comes off again. Two bolts and your bike is back to standard. A module fitted inside a brake lamp doesn’t undo that easily.
“But your V7.0 has Brake Mode. Isn’t that the same thing?”
Fair question, and it’s the one we’d ask.
No — and the distinction is exactly the one this article is about.
Brake Mode takes a signal from the brake circuit. When you touch the lever, the pods know about it and fire. What it does not do is go inside your brake lamp and change how that lamp behaves. Your brake light still comes on the way it always did, at the brightness it always did, for as long as it always did. The pods are still separate units doing their own job; they’ve simply been told when you’re braking.
It is an add-on, not the main event. The pods still do their own job on their own switch, whether you are braking or not — Brake Mode simply adds a flash on the brakes on top, so the rider behind gets more warning at the moment it matters most.
So you get the thing people actually want from a flasher — extra attention when you slow down — without anyone opening a safety component to get it.

What to check before you buy either
Whichever way you go, three questions are worth asking the seller before money changes hands.
Does this go inside my brake light? If yes, you’re buying a modification, not an accessory. That may still be fine. Just know which one you’re doing.
Can it be removed? Ask what the bike looks like afterwards if you take it off.
What happens to my warranty? Ask your dealer, not the person selling you the part.
